Lady Gaga’s recent accomplishments include having more “fans” on Facebook than any other living human. She crushed the 10,000,000 mark earlier this year, surpassing President Barack Obama. Not bad for a 24-year-old diva. Although far less exclusive, but obviously impressive, she can add the cover and interview with the venerable Vanity Fair magazine.

It’s not surprising that the majority of blogs and mainstream media focuses on re-reporting that she admits to using cocaine “occasionally.” By her own account, prior to her fame, Lady Gaga was an addicted mess that did “bags and bags of cocaine” until her father confronted her.

On a more interesting note, the Vanity Fair interview reveals that Lady Gaga admits to being “perpetually lonely” despite her global success. “I’m lonely when I’m in relationships,” she says. “It’s my condition as an artist.” That statement might be the truest one in there. Most of The 27s suffered creative burns that manifested themselves in loneliness and/or bad relationships.

Lady Gaga’s conversation with Vanity Fair continued. “I’m drawn to bad romances. And my song [Bad Romance] is about whether I go after those [sorts of relationships] or if they find me.

“I have this weird thing that if I sleep with someone they’re going to take my creativity from me.” Consequently, she says, “I’m quite celibate now; I don’t really get time to meet anyone.”

The read the whole thing, be sure to stop by a newsstand.

Kanye West protege Kid Cudi from Cleveland recently got himself into some trouble. He tore a door of its hinges during a domestic dispute. Scary shit–yea, we know. The cops came and he was arrested for criminal mischief. When they found some liquid cocaine in his pocket they slapped on a drug possession charge.

Kid Cudi is a well-known stoner, but speaking in Brooklyn at a recent appearance he made a point to say he was not headed the way of The 27s:

“I know you guys were hearing some sh*t about me in the news. I was wilding out and sh*t, but I’m good now. I just smoke weed. I know n*ggas die when they 27. I’m 26 now, but I promise I’ll live till I’m old as sh*t.”

The release of Kid Cudi’s second album, “G.O.O.D. Music Day” (featuring Kanye West, Consequence, and Big Sean) has now been pushed back till September 30, 2010.

Here’s an interesting interview with clips from the upcoming disc. Kid Cudi has some brains, so hopefully he won’t continue to waste ‘em.

At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, one of the most talked-about movies to debut was The Tillman Story.

“Pat Tillman gave up his professional football career to join the Army Rangers in 2002—and became an instant symbol of patriotic fervor and unflinching duty. But the truth about Pat Tillman is far more complex, and ultimately more heroic, than the caricature created by the media. And when the government tried to turn his death into war propaganda, they took on the wrong family. From her home in the Santa Cruz mountains, Pat’s mother, Dannie Tillman, led the family’s crusade to reveal the truth beneath the mythology of their son’s life and death.

Featuring candid and revelatory interviews with Pat’s fellow soldiers as well as his family, Amir Bar-Lev’s emotional and insightful film not only shines a light on the shady aftermath of Pat’s death and calls to task the entire chain of command but also examines themes as timeless as the notion of heroism itself.” –Sundance.com

While Willy Brown and his headstone is making headlines, there is a continual search to find physical evidence of the blues era’s men . There are no known photos of Willie, but it would make sense given the times, the vagabonding lifestyle these men lived and the likely chance anyone in the audience was carrying a Canon… that being said, the past few years have surprisingly brought to light 2 new photographs purported to be that of 27 Club founder, Robert Johnson.

The first was featured in the November 2008 issue of Vanity Fair magazine. An avid guitar collector, Zeke Schein, claims he now owns the third known photograph of Johnson, and that he bought it off of eBay.

The seller advertised the photo as that of a “young BB King” but Schein was convinced otherwise. $2200 had the item shipped and delivered. Upon closer scrutiny, Schein believed the man to the left of “Robert” to be, none other than that of Johnny Shines, well-known traveler and companion of Johnson during their heydays. The hands and facial features certainly suggest an affinity for Johnson’s own, but to date, the certainty is still less than 100%.

A second photo, eerily similar to the much heralded cigarette photo booth shot, came to light in early 2007 when the owner asked for a whopping $795,000 at opening auction. Crazy, right?!? Maybe not so when you figure this in… In the summer of 2006, what was dubbed, the “Holy Grail” of musical instruments popped up: the guitar said to be held by Robert Johnson in his infamous cross-legged portrait. For a mere $6 million, the guitar went up for grabs across the web. There was little proof other than some photo comparisons, but risk seems to be less important than an opportunity to own music history.

Whether or not these artifacts do in fact hold clues about the lives of Robert, Johnny, or even Willie does not really matter. The quest to authenticate Robert or Willie’s life will continue to enthuse and inspire music fans across the globe. And, who knows, maybe the ole’ thrift store down the road holds the proof of Willie’s mug, Robert’s additional threads or links in the chain to a history we can’t get enough of. Cheers!

Red Sox rookie, Daniel Nava, crushed a Grand-Slam out of Fenway Park on his first at bat in the Majors. In fact, it was the first ball he had seen pitched in his rookie debut for Boston’s big leagues. He is only the second player to do so following Kevin Kouzmanoff’s September 2nd, 2006 dinger for Cleveland against Texas (STATS LLC.)

The 5-foot-ten-inch Nava approached the plate like everyday business. “I wanted to treat it like I normally do,” he said. “I just said, `How are you guys doing (to umpire Bill Hohn and catcher Brian Schneider)?’(notes) They didn’t say anything.”

The bases were loaded for Boston with no outs.

“I knew it was his first at-bat, but I tried to throw him a sinker away,” Blanton said. “I threw it right down the middle and it didn’t sink.”

Blanton’s fast ball ended up in the right-field bleachers before Nava realized what had happened. In perfect Major League fashion, Nava had his chance to soak it up as Fenway Park’s enthusiasm pulled Nava from the dugout for a rookie curtain call.

27 represents the number of outs a pitcher needs to complete a game. The mid-20s are the golden years for players. Following the heels of Oakland’s Dallas Braden’ (26) 19th perfect game in Major League history in May, Detroit Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga’s perfect game ended controversially with the 27th batter in the ninth inning. The first base umpire Jim Joyce incorrectly called safe on a close play, but after the fact, when Joyce realized his mistake cost a perfect game, he tearfully apologized. The 28 year-old Galarraga gracefully accepted.

After the game, GM gave the pitcher a $53,000 Corvette, an act that The New York Times’ Nick Bunkley called in to question on the grounds that the U.S. Government currently holds 61 percent of GM stock. “A free sports car for a Detroit Tigers baseball player was not among the reasons the government saved General Motors from financial collapse.”

More than a week has passed and research firm Joyce Julius & Associates in Ann Arbor, Mich., said GM’s gift was cited in 714 TV programs, publicity worth about $1 million. It was also covered in 151,000 publications and Web entries, including Drive On, worth another $7.9 million. Crain’s says GM didn’t commission or pay for the report. Wonder what Nick Buntley thinks of that? For the cost of a couple of full-page ads in glossy magazines, GM netted an estimated $9 million worth of publicity. Sounds like a pretty good deal to us.

With those words, rock’s grandfather and 27s archetype Robert Johnson immortalized bluesman Willie Brown in his prophetic “Cross Road Blues.” Cream (Eric Clapton, Ginger Baker, and Jack Bruce), of course, brought the song into the rock canon with their version of the song.

While Willie Brown’s name is immortalized, his earthly remains rest in an unmarked grave in Tunica County, Mississippi. A group of blue fans, scholars, and musicians are in the process of raising $2,100 to get him a proper headstone at the Good Shepherd Church in Tunica. The Willie Brown Blues Benefit takes place September 26, 2010, in Tampa, Florida, and donations are collected there and through Paypal. Reminds us of Janis Joplin and the effort she was a part of with Juanita Green, which resulted in a permanent resting place for blues great Bessie Smith.

We commend Jason Rewald and the other fine folks at tdblues.com for this great cause and for their fantastic research, digging up census records, death certificates, and writing about Robert Johnson’s guitars, tunings, and much more. Keep it up!

National Public Radio dubbed Janis Joplin “the Queen of Rock” on a segment that aired this morning. Instead of the typical “best of” (read: “most famous”) track selections, the producers included a live version of “Women Is Losers” from a 1966 performance at San Francisco’s Avalon Ballroom. “Ball and Chain” from Monterey Pop followed and it was rounded out by the famous “Me and Bobby McGee.” They did not credit Kris Kristofferson with the song, which is too bad, as many people erroneously believe was written by the Queen of Rock. For more Janis Joplin on NPR, be sure to listen to the interview about The 27s from 2009.

There is little doubt that Janis Joplin’s iconic voice and wild lifestyle in the midst of the counter cultural sixties opened up the playing field to female rock stars, but although there have been countless famous singer-songwriters in the Joni Mitchell-vein and divas such as Madonna, not nearly enough larger-than-life Queen-bee rock personalities have emerged. I’m thinking A-list names here, which unfortunately rules out the Riot Grrrl movement. Courtney Love and Amy Winehouse stand out like an open bottle of Jack at Sunday mass. Who else?

While shooting the video for his first single, titled “Yung Hott Killin ‘Em,” Griffin, Georgia, rapper Yung Hott (his real name was Jerode Paige) was shot and killed. He was 27 years old and is thus the latest member of the fabled 27 Club.

The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports this morning that the police has arrested four men suspected of the murder. The AJC writes, “Bahir Howard, 22, Corderra Walker, 21, Terry James Fuller, 31, and Terrance Jones, 23 — are being held without bond in the Spalding County Jail on charges of murder, aggravated battery, child cruelty and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.”

A little girl playing nearby with her toy car was shot in the foot and injured during the shooting, which took place around 6pm Saturday night. According to reports, 150 people were present during the shooting either working on the video shoot or there to see it take place. Several witnesses got a good look at the assassins. “I saw them,” witness Virginia Berry told Channel 2’s Tony Thomas. “They just shot him like this; pump, pump, shoot, pump, shoot, pump.” At least twenty rounds were fired, according to the police.

Eerily, the cover of Yung Hott’s single looked like the crime scene, complete with a Griffin police cruiser, cordons, and a body. At this point the motive for the killing is not known.

Yung Hott has a previous record of drug-related offenses, but was in the process of refashioning his life as a full-time rapper. His single was receiving some airplay in the Atlanta rap scene at the time of his murder.

You can watch Channel 2’s coverage of the incident here.

Check back for more about this later.
